Logistics Services

The logistics services industry consists of several companies providing services for various types of transportation. These logistics companies provide several services to customers, including warehousing and transportation. Some companies provide these services as part of their everyday business, while others provide services to customers on a contractual basis. Some companies perform both functions.

In general, logistics companies work with the end-user to develop a plan of operation and manage the supply of goods and services to the end-user. End-users, in turn, receive goods and services from the logistics companies in accordance with the plan of operation. The plan of operation may specify the volume, quantity, and/or kinds of goods and services required by the end-user. The logistics companies are responsible for organizing and maintaining the required transportation services and providing the goods and services to the end-user in accordance with the plan of operation. In this way, the logistics companies facilitate the flow of goods and materials between point and point by providing transportation services.

 These logistics services include any or all of the following: freight, inland transportation, rail, air, trucks, pipelines, warehouses, warehousing, order fulfillment, distribution, supply chain management, and logistics support services, which includes order and product flow planning, management, and control.

The services that the logistics industry provides cover all or parts of these seven functions: Freight – the transportation of goods to an end-user or final destination, typically from the warehouse to a final point of departure or delivery to the end customer. Inland transportation – includes the transportation of products within a country, and includes services such as trucking, barge, waterborne services, rail transportation, and air freight. Rail – refers to the transport of products by rail, the largest component of the global transportation market. Rail freight transport is the largest and most efficient transportation method for intermodal freight. Air – refers to the transportation of goods by air, the second largest component of the global transportation market. Air is used as a method of shipping to places where other means of transport cannot be used, such as inland waterways and tunnels. Air freight covers shipments by air in all modes, including passenger, cargo, and hazardous materials, and consists of freight services such as cargo forwarding, customs clearance, air freight, freight forwarding, air freight transport, and transport management. Trucks – refers to the transportation of goods by road, the third largest component of the global transportation market. Pipelines – refers to the transport of liquids by pipeline, the fourth largest component of the global transportation market. Warehouses – refers to the storing of products for use at a later time. The warehousing industry is very specialized and includes storage and handling, order picking and delivery, logistics management, inventory control, and customer service.
